Robert Henry Winder [wi.]

Robert Henry Winder was the second child of John Winder & Eliza Mary Ager born Oct-December 1856 at Edmonton, Middlesex.

In 1861 Robert was visiting ‘grandmother’ Sarah Hearn (76) at Newington who was a widow. There was also a niece visiting her – Charlotte Wyatt (30).

At the time of the 1871census Robert was still at home which was a pub called the Prince Regent at Hoxton New Town, Shoreditch, London where his father was a licensed victualler. His brother William & sister Eliza were at home & visiting them was their grandmother Letitia Winder, described as ‘widow of an omnibus proprieter’ aged 69.

In 1881 Robert was living at Camden Rd with his widowed father & brother & sister. He & his brother & father were all wine merchants. Robert’s cousin George Frederick Buchanan, the son of Caroline Winder, was living with them.

According to Annie Pentecost Robert inherited his father’s diamond & ruby ring at the time of his father’s death in 1887.

Robert died on November 1st, 1888 at 167 Junction Rd, Holloway, Middlesex.  Probate was granted to his brother, William John Winder, wine merchant, on September 5th, 1889 & his personal estate was £1,625, resworn as £725 in October 1890.  It was noted on the probate form that Robert was a ‘gentleman’ & that William John was his only next of kin.
