Eliza Sarah Winder was the third child of John Winder & Eliza Mary Ager born April-June 1858 at Edmonton, Middlesex.
In 1861 Eliza & her parents & older brother William were living at
Webbs Cottages, Edmonton where her father was an omnibus conductor.
At the time of the 1871census Eliza was still at home which was a pub called
the Prince Regent at Hoxton New Town, Shoreditch, London where her father
was a licensed victualler. Brother William & Robert were at home &
visiting them was their grandmother Letitia Winder, described as ‘widow
of an omnibus proprieter’ aged 69.
In 1881 Eliza was living at Camden Rd with her widowed father & brothers. Eliza’s cousin George Frederick Buchanan, the son of Caroline Winder, was living with them.
Eliza of 188 Camden Rd was christened on July 19th, 1882 at St Paul, St Pancras.
On April 26th, 1883 Eliza married Samuel Edwards Nelson, a tailor, at the Parish Church of St Pancras. Witnesses at the wedding were Henry Payne, Thomas Edward Nelson & Mary Ann Stafford. Samuel was the son of Sarah Edwards & Samuel Nelson, a tailor, born April-June 1860 at Brompton, London.
According to Annie Pentecost Eliza inherited her father’s grand piano on his death in 1887.
Eliza died on July 3rd, 1889, aged 31, at 4 Hargrave Park Rd, Upper Holloway, Middlesex. On September 19th, 1889 probate was granted to her brother, William John Winder of Mincing Lane, City of London & of 47 Lawford Rd, Kentish Town & James McDougall Tudge, county surgeon. Her personal estate was £2,296.2s.9d, resworn March 1890 as £1,843.1s.3d & resworn again on February 1891 as £1,420.10s.11d.
Although the record of Eliza’s probate indicated that she was a widow, the 1891 census shows Samuel E Nelson recorded as a widower living with his parents Sarah & Samuel at Upper Park Rd, Hampstead. Samuel was a tailor. Eliza & Samuel’s son Reggy was listed with his ‘aunt’ Letitia Livermore (nee Winder) at 14 Stratford Place, St Pancras at the time of the 1891 census.
On May 25th, 1892 son Reginald was christened at St Paul’s, St Pancras & his address was given as 14 Stratford Place, where he was living with ‘aunt’ Letitia in 1891.
By 1901 son Reginald had moved to the High St, Chatham, Kent where he was a draper’s apprentice. In 1905 he married Harriet Emily Fuller in Luton. Soon after their marriage they emigrated to Canada & came to live in Saskatchewan where Reggy was a farmer.
