William Barnett [b.2.8]

William Barnett was the eighth child of Thomas Barnett and Sarah Williams born in Remenham, Berkshire, on August 17th, 1793 and christened on October 6th 1793 at Remenham.

William married Ann Matthews on October 18th, 1825 at St Helens, Worcester. Ann was the daughter of Joseph and Ann Matthews of Coscomb, christened at Didbrook, Gloucestershire, on July 15th, 1796.

In 1826 and 1828, entries in the Hambleden parish register state that William was a farmer of Rockwell End, Hambleden. By 1834 he had moved to Saunderton, also in Bucks.

In 1841 William & Ann were living at Saunderton Grange with children Frances Ann, Benjamin, Thomas, Susan Elizabeth & George Henry. They had 3 servants also living with them. Children Catherine (10) & William (5) were at a school in High Wycombe run by Elizabeth & Caroline Heath in the High St.

In 1851 William (57) was a farmer of 220 acres employing 8 labourers living at Grange Farm, Saunderton. There were 2 children at home - Benjamin (22) & Susan (15).

In 1861 he was still a farmer, and living at Saunderton Lee with wife Annie & Benjamin & Susan who were listed as farmers.

On July 15th, 1865 daughter Catherine married her cousin Thomas Barnett [b.2.9.1] at St James’, Clerkenwell.  Thomas was the first son of  Hannah & Joseph Barnett who was born in Remenham in 1834.

Ann died of bronchitis on December 27th, 1870 at Grange Farm, Saunderton, aged 72 according to the death registration, however her actual age was most probably 74.

In the 1871 census widower William's address was given as Saunderton Grange, although it is possible that he had never moved - just the description of his abode had changed across the years. He was 77 and described as a farmer of 220 acres employing 5 men and 3 boys. Living with him were daughter Susan & son William (32).

William died on November 14th, 1875. The probate index stated that he was late of Saunderton Grange, Saunderton, in the County of Buckingham and he was a farmer. His Will and Codicil was proved at Oxford on June 23rd, 1876 by son Thomas Barnett of Truro, Cornwell, Surveyor of Taxes, one of the Executors. William's effects were under £1,500.
