Dorothy Lister was the third child of John Lister and Elizabeth Tate born January 22nd, 1794 at Appleton Wiske & christened January 23rd, 1794 at St Mary’s R.C Church, Craythorne, N. Yorks. Her godparents were Joseph Tate & Dorothy Alderson.
Dorothy married Robert Chipchase of Appleton Wiske on October 22nd, 1811 at Ormesby, N. Yorks. Robert was christened November 15th, 1786 at Appleton Wiske, the son of Ann & William Chipchase.
Dorothy & Robert, a linen weaver, were living in Appleton on Wiske in 1841 with them was Dorothy’s widowed father John Lister. They had 3 sons at home – Joseph (20), Robert (15) & Thomas (15).
In 1851 Dorothy & Robert continued to live in Appleton on Wiske & Robert was described as a handloom weaver (linen). With them was granddaughter Elizabeth Chipchase aged 11. They had 3 lodgers all working on the railway.
Dorothy & Robert were living on their own in 1861, still in Appleton Wiske. Robert was still a linen weaver.
Robert, 84, was still working as a linen weaver in 1871 & he & Dorothy were living at Back St, Appleton Wiske.
Dorothy died in 1871 & was buried on July 2nd at St Mary’s, Appleton Wiske.
Robert lived to be 89 years of age & was buried on Sunday, August 15th, 1875 at St Mary’s, Appleton Wiske. Some controversy arose after the burial of Robert. A parish meeting was held to express concern over the behaviour of the Rev. S T Mosse who conducted the service. It was alleged that he did not perform the full burial service in the church but only officiated at the graveside. In his defence the Rev. Mosse said that on Sundays he had 3 services to perform & the time chosen for the burial had necessitated his actions. It was thought that as this had occurred at another burial recently, perhaps it should be suggested to the Bishop that a curate should be appointed to assist the aging rector.
