John Lister was the eighth child of William Lister & Elisabeth Metcalf christened May 13th, 1759 at Welbury, N. Yorkshire.
John Lister of Welbury married Elizabeth Tate on May 13th, 1788 at Appleton Wiske, N. Yorks. Witnesses at the wedding were Dorothy Tate & William Chipsis (church warden). Elizabeth was born c1766 in Appleton Wiske, N. Yorks, the daughter of Elizabeth & Joseph Tate. It appears that Elizabeth was Roman Catholic as most of John & Elizabeth’s children were christened at St Mary’s R.C. church, Craythorne, N. Yorks. Also in 1801 John & Elizabeth were godparents to John Tate who was christened in December 1801 at St Mary’s Craythorne, the son of Elizabeth’s brother Christopher Tate & his wife Ann.
John & Elizabeth lived for some time in Ormesby, N. Yorks where Elizabeth died in 1808 (soon after the birth of her eighth child) and first son Thomas married in 1811.
Elizabeth, aged 42, was buried on May 17th, 1808 at Ormesby, N. Yorks.
In 1841 John was living with his daughter Dorothy & husband Robert Chipchase, a linen weaver, & their family at Appleton-upon-Wiske.
John, aged 88, died in 1845 & was buried on December 2nd at Appleton Wiske. The informant of his death was Robert Chipchase.
