Elizabeth Lister

Elizabeth Lister was the second child of John Lister and Elizabeth Tate born August 4th 1792 at Appleton Wiske & christened August 8th, 1792 at St Mary’s R.C Church, Craythorne, N. Yorks.  Her godparents were Margaret & Joseph Tate.

Elizabeth married William Hodgson on November 14th, 1820 at Eston, N. Yorks.  Witnesses at the wedding were John Fairburn & Elizabeth’s sister Jane Lister.  It was a double wedding as Elizabeth’s sister Margaret married John Baker the same day. 

Elizabeth & William, a bricklayer, were living at South Row, Stokesley in 1841 with family Thomas (14), Joseph (11), William (7) & Elizabeth (3).

William died in 1849, aged 56 & was buried on May 17th at St Peter & St Paul, Stokesley.

In 1851 widowed Elizabeth was living in Stokesley & described as a bricklayer’s widow.  Head of the household was her 24 year old son Thomas, a master bricklayer employing 3 men.  Living with them were sons Joseph (21) & William (16), both bricklayer journeymen, & daughter Elizabeth (13).

Elizabeth continued to live with son Thomas & in 1861 they were living in Yard in South High St, Stokesley.  Thomas continued to work as a bricklayer & was now married to Jane A & they had 3 children at this time – Margaret E (8), Mary I (7) & William L (4).  There was also a nephew of Thomas living with them, Thomas Hodgson (14), working as a bricklayer.

Elizabeth died aged 73 & was buried on December 13th, 1865 at St Peter & St Paul, Stokesley.

Robert Hodgson christened July 29th, 1821 at Stokesley; buried November 18th, 1838 at St Peter & St Paul, Stokesley.
John Hodgson christened May 25th, 1823 at Stokesley
Thomas Hodgson christened August 27th, 1826 at Stokesley
Joseph Hodgson christened October 4th, 1829 at Stokesley
William Hodgson christened April 27th, 1834 at Stokesley
Elizabeth Hodgson christened October 31st, 1837 at Stokesley
