Ellen Lister

Ellen Lister was the seventh child of William Lister & Elisabeth Metcalf christened April 25th, 1756 at Welbury, Yorks.

Ellen married William Mankin on May 24th, 1787 at Welbury, N. Yorks.  Witnesses at the wedding were John Blackett & Michael Meek (church warden).  William was christened December 2nd, 1760 at Middleham, N. Yorks, the son of Jane & William Mankin.

Son John married Ann Smith in October 1820 at Hauxwell, N. Yorks & by 1851 he was a master cartwright still living in Welbury with his family.

Daughters Jane & Mary both married in 1824 in Welbury.  Jane married James Smith in January & Mary married Samuel Neesam (Neasham?)  in June.  Jane & James Smith, a carrier, came to live in Yarm & in 1871 their daughter Jane was still living with them.  Mary & Samuel Neasham continued to live in Welbury & by 1871 Samuel had changed from being a tailor to a farm labourer.  They had a son William Neasham & the 1881 census shows sisters Jane Smith & Mary Neasham, both widowed, & described as ‘mothers’ living with Jane (nee Smith) & William Neasham, a farmer, in Maltby, Middlesbrough.  Cousins Jane & William had married in 1875 at Yarm.

Daughter Elizabeth married John Stedman in May 1826 at Welbury.

In January 1829 the banns were published for the marriage of son Thomas to Ann Elwood with the consent of their parent.  However, the entry for the marriage in Welbury shows that the marriage was not solemnized.  Thomas, a grocer, was to marry Jane Mudd in April 1841.

William, aged 75, was buried on March 9th, 1835 St Leonard’s, Welbury.

Ellen, aged 79, was buried on July 8th, 1835 at St Leonard’s, Welbury.
