Hannah Freeth [fh.4.6.1.4.1]

Hannah Freeth was the first child of William Freeth & Sarah Gutteridge christened November 9th, 1828 at Smethwick, Staffs.

In 1841 Hannah was a servant with the Thomson family at Cross St, Harborne.

In 1851 Hannah was living back at home at Robuck Lane, Smethwick with her parents & brothers & sisters - George (20) a caster at the iron works, Samuel (17) a glass maker, William (14) & Thomas (12) both labourers at the glass works, Edwin (10), John (8), Emma (6), Sarah (3) & Jane (3 months). Also listed on the census was a grandson Leonard Freeth (2), the illegitimate child of Hannah.

Hannah married Henry Blackman on July 19th, 1857 at St Peter’s, Harborne.  Witnesses at the wedding were George Blackman & Hannah Elizabeth Blackman. Henry was the son of Sarah & George Blackman christened April 6th, 1828 at Tockenham, Wilts.

In 1861 Hannah & Henry were living at 10 Roebuck Lane, Smethwick, near her parents at #6 Roebuck Lane. Her illegitimate son, Leonard, was in fact still living with his grandparents & was working as a carter boy. Hannah & Henry had 2 children – Samuel F (3) & George H F (1), & Henry worked as a plate layer.

By 1871 Hannah & Henry (Honey in census) had moved to Jesson St, West Bromwich where Henry was a railway labourer. At home were Samuel, George H, Sarah H F (9), William (5) & Edwin (3). Also with them at the time of the census was Jabez S Blackman, a 5 year old nephew. Their daughter Mary J F was visiting her uncle John Freeth & aunts Sarah & Jane and half-brother Leonard at Roebuck Lane, Smethwick.

In 1881 Henry & Hannah (referenced as Blackmoor in Ancestry.co.uk) were living at 40 Bilhay St, West Bromwich & Henry was listed as a railway platelayer. At home were Samuel, also a railway platelayer, Sarah H, Mary J, William, an ironworks boy, & Edwin. With them at the time of the census was niece Mary J Freeth (3) & a boarder, William Partridge (32), a brass founder.

In 1891 they were still living at Bilhay St (now #37) & Henry continued to be a railway platelayer. Still at home were Samuel, now an assurance agent, Sarah H F, a spring maker & William, a cutter down. Still boarding with them was William Partridge. Daughter Mary Jane had married Benjamin Smith, a coal miner, by this time & they were living at 24 Richard St, West Bromwich with their 2 sons & 2 daughters. By 1911 Mary Jane & Benjamin had had 13 children, 9 of whom were still living & were living in Bernard St, West Bromwich.

Hannah died in Jan-March 1900, aged 71, her death being registered at West Bromwich.

Henry died in Oct-December 1900, aged 71, his death being registered at West Bromwich.

At the time of the 1901 census their children Samuel, still an assurance agent, Sarah, still a spring maker, William, now a horse driver & Edwin who was an assurance agent & also widowed by this time, were still living in the parental home at 37 Bilhay St. (Edwin had married Elizabeth Knott in 1893 in West Bromwich.) They had a domestic servant, Gertrude Harcourt (15). Son William married Phoebe Green later in 1901 in West Bromwich.  By 1911 William & Phoebe were living at Hill Top, West Bromwich with their 9 year old daughter Bessie.  William was a horse driver at the steel works.

Son Edwin married again in 1901.  His second wife was Susannah Grace Wall & by 1911 they were living at Hill Top, West Bromwich with their 2 daughters, Ivy & May.  Edwin was now a stationary engine driver.

Son Samuel decided to marry in 1906 & he & his wife Emma Elizabeth (nee Casswell)  were living at 61 Temple St, West Bromwich in 1911 & he was still an insurance agent.

Daughter Sarah married Joseph D Holland, an insurance agent, in 1918 in West Bromwich.  In 1939 Joseph was retired & they were living at Littleton St, West Bromwich.
