Eliza Jane Freeth [fh.4.6.1.7.1.5]

Eliza Jane Freeth was the fifth child of Samuel Freeth & Jane Rebecca Lambert born April-June 1865 at Smethwick, Staffs.

In 1871 the family were still at Smethwick but now living at Causer St. Eliza (known as Jane) now had 5 sisters.

By 1881 the family had moved to 4 Birmingham Rd, Oldbury where Eliza Jane’s father was a glass maker. Eliza had 5 sisters & a brother at home.

In 1891 Eliza Jane was still living at home at Birmingham St, now #8, along with 4 sisters & her brother.

By 1901 Eliza Jane’s father had died & she & her mother & brother Samuel were living at 71 High St, Smethwick. Eliza was described as an assistant pork butcher to her mother, as was Samuel.

Eliza married Alfred Gilbert at Holy Trinity, Smethwick in July-September 1906. Alfred was born April-June 1873 at Birmingham, the son of Adelaide & William Gilbert, a farmer & cattle dealer.

In 1911 Eliza & Alfred were living at 20 Waterloo Rd, Smethwick & Alfred was a dairyman with Eliza assisting in the business. They had a 3 year old daughter, Marie Blanche & employed a domestic servant.

Alfred of 20 Waterloo Rd, Bearwood, Smethwick died on May 2nd, 1930 at the City Hospital, Dudley Rd, Birmingham.  Probate was granted on July 1st, 1930 to widow Eliza Jane.  His effects amounted to £1,506.15s.10d.

Widowed Eliza died on January 1st, 1936 at 20 Waterloo Rd, Smethwick.  Administration (save & except settled land) was granted in Birmingham on May 23rd, 1936 to daughter Marie Blanche Gilbert, spinster.  Her effects amounted to £770.16s.10d.  On February 18th, 1937 administration of the settled land was given to the Public Trustee.  Effects were valued at £1,119.

Daughter Marie was still living at 20 Waterloo Rd at the time of the 1939 register where she was a shopkeeper groceries.  In 1966 she married Sidney John Harris in Pershore, Worcs.
