William Horton was the twelfth child of Henry Horton & Esther Lines christened April 8th, 1827 at All Saints, West Bromwich. Staffs.
In 1841 William was still at home with his parents at Walsall St, West Bromwich. There were 4 other brothers at home as well as 2 sisters & a visiting sister-in-law.
William married Sarah Jones in October 1850 at Tipton, Staffs. Sarah was born c1830 at Nacklestone, Herefordshire, the daughter of Charles Jones, a confectioner.
In 1851 William & Sarah were living at Walsall St, West Bromwich, next door to William’s parents. He was a labourer & they had a 2 month old daughter Esther.
By 1861 William & Sarah had moved to Wednesbury, Staffs, & were living at Mestey Croft. William was now a stock taker & they had 3 children – Esther, Mary A (6) & Jane (4).
At the time of the 1871 census the family were living at Moxley, Darlaston, Wednesbury. William was described as a stock taker at the iron works & Sarah was a tailoress, as were daughters Mary Ann & Jane. They had another daughter Annie (9).
In 1881 William & Sarah were still living at Wednesbury, now at 67 Holyhead Rd. William was a forge stock taker & Sarah continued to be a tailoress. Daughter Annie was at home & also with them was grandson William Ward (7). There were also 2 boarders, Thomas York, a forge labourer & his wife Marrian, a dress maker. Marrian was in fact daughter Mary Ann who had married Thomas York in 1872.
Sarah died in July 1885, aged 55, in Wednesbury & was buried on July 5th at Moxley.
Sadly William was found in the Union Workhouse West Bromwich in 1891, described as an iron stocktaker.
William died aged 73, at the Workhouse & was buried on June 26th, 1900, at All Saints, Moxley.
