Ann Lister [li.4]

Ann Lister was the fourth child of Thomas Lister & Ann Pattison christened October 14th, 1819 at Ormesby, Yorks.

At the time of the 1841 census Ann was listed with her sister Mary, now married to Thomas Stainsby, at The Rising Sun Inn, Linthorpe, Yorks. She was working as a servant.

Ann married Robert Robinson in Jan-March 1842 at Stockton. Robert was the son of Mary & John Robinson, christened October 16th, 1817 at Marton in Cleveland, Yorks.

In 1851 Robert & Ann were living at West St, Middlesbrough where Robert was a butcher. They had 2 sons at home – Thomas (8) & William H (6). Daughter Jane (4) was visiting her aunt Mary Lister, now married to Thomas Stainsby at Linthorpe & son John (2) was visiting his aunt Margaret Lister at her farm in Ormesby. Ann’s sister Hannah Lister (20) was living with the Robinsons as a servant.

In 1861 Robert & Ann were living at Corporation Rd, Middlesbrough. Son William was still at home & was a butcher like his father. Also at home were Jane & John & they now had additional children - Robert (6), Ann (4) & Edward (2). They had a general servant, Lucy Duller (15).

By 1871 Ann & Robert had moved to Linthorpe, Middlesbrough where Robert was still a butcher with 2 butcher servants living with them. Daughter Ann & son Edward were still living at home which was 2 Denmark St.

They were still living at 2 High Denmark St in 1881 & at home were Edward, now a watchmakers jobber, & Ann. Visiting was a 21 year old niece, Mary Ann Kirk, daughter of Ann’s sister Hannah Maria who had married George Kirk.

Ann died in 1889 aged 69 & was buried August 27th, at the Municipal Cemetery, Linthorpe,  Middlesbrough.

In 1891 widower Robert was living at 9 Jedburgh St, Middlesbrough & at age 73 was still a butcher. Living with him were granddaughters Annie Hawman (23), a dressmaker, & Ruth Hawman (20) an ex-pupil teacher. They were the children of daughter Jane Robinson who had married Richard Hawman in 1866.

In 1901 Robert was living with his granddaughter Ruth Hawman now married to John T Joy, a schoolmaster from York, & their son Norman L (2 months). They were living at ‘Beaconsfield’, The Avenue, Middlesbrough. Robert had now retired & was living on his own means.

Robert lived to the ripe old age of 86 & died at Middlesbrough in April-June 1904 & was buried at the Municipal Cemetery, Linthorpe,  Middlesbrough.

li.4.2 William Henry Robinson christened January 12th, 1845 at St Hilda’s, Middlesbrough; buried February 16th, 1883 at the Municipal Cemetery, Linthorpe,  Middlesbrough.
li.4.3 Jane Robinson christened September 27th, 1846 at St Hilda’s, Middlesbrough
li.4.4 John Robinson born Oct-December 1848 & christened May 13th, 1849 at St Hilda’s, Middlesbrough
li.4.5 Robert Robinson born May 3rd, 1854 & christened August 6th, 1854 at St Hilda’s, Middlesbrough
li.4.6 Ann Robinson born April-June 1856, christened January 11th, 1857 at St Hilda’s, Middlesbrough
li.4.7 Edward Robinson born Jan-March 1859 & christened June 26th, 1859  at St Hilda’s, Middlesbrough; buried March 1st, 1890 at New Linthorpe Cemetery
