Frederick Lister [li.7.10]

Frederick Lister was the tenth child of Thomas Lister & Hannah Herring born September 2nd, & christened September 28th, 1872 at St Cuthbert’s, Ormesby, 1872 at Ormesby, Yorks.

At the time of the 1881 census Frederick was living with his older brother Richard, who was a farmer of 5 acres at Ormesby. Also with them was his older brother John (16).

In 1891 Frederick was lodging at West Burton, Aysgarth, near Richmond & was described as a horse wagoner. Listed on the census with him was a Richard Lister, aged 32, possibly Frederick's brother. However Richard was also listed in the 1891 census at Thimbleby, Osmotherley with his brother James. Richard's occupation was given both times as a wagoner or carter & it is possible that he travelled between the two villages & hence was listed on the census for both.

In 1901 Frederick was living with his brother John at Ormesby. Frederick was described as a navvy & John was a contractor man. They were both unmarried & had a 49 year old domestic house keeper Jane Lambert.

Frederick married Mary Sudron on January 28th, 1905 at All Saints, Middlesborough .  Witnesses at the wedding were Walter Ware & Jane Sudron.  Mary was born April 13th, 1883 at South Bank, & christened May 2nd, 1883 at Eston, Middlesbrough, the daughter of Elizabeth Sedgwick and John Sudron, a gas work labourer.

In 1911 Frederick and Mary were living at 6 West Terrace, North Ormseby.  Frederick was now a general carter and they had 2 children, Frederick (5) and Wilfred Percival (1), one child having died. It is known that Frederick and Mary had at least 3 more children.

In July-September 1936 son John Gordon married Margery Coates at Middlesbrough.

The 1939 register shows Frederick & Mary living at 26 West Terrace, Middlesbrough & Frederick was now manager, confectionery tobacco dealer.  Living with them were sons Frederick, manager, wholesale confectionery tobacco dealer, Wilfred P, a steelworks analytical chemist & noted as incapacitated & son James, wholesale sweets & tobacco salesman.

Son Wilfred Percival died on August 31st, 1942 at 26 West Terrace, North Ormesby and administration of his estate was granted to mother Mary in 1943. He was buried at North Ormesby Municipal Cemetery.

Son James Julien married Betty Bryant on March 31st, 1948 at Middlesbrough & lived at 27 Marina Ave, Coatham, Redcar.

Frederick died, aged 79, on February 22nd, 1952 at 21 Marina Avenue, Coatham, Redcar, N. Yorks and was buried on February 26th  in North Ormesby Municipal Cemetery alongside son Wilfred Percival.  Probate was granted on July 11th, 1952 to widow Mary. His effects were £12790.13s.9d.
