James Edward Lister [li.7.6]

James Edward Lister was the sixth child of Thomas Lister & Hannah Herring christened April 27th, 1863 at Ormesby, Yorks.

In 1871 James was living with his parents & family at High St, Ormesby.

In 1881 James was working as a servant at Berrick Hills Farm, Ormesby for farmer Peter Sturdy.

James married Eizabeth Blenkhorn on May 22nd, 1890, at Stockton.  Elizabeth was christened on the eighth Sunday after Trinity, 1864 at Osmotherley, Yorks, daughter of Mahala & John Blenkhorn, a jet miner.

In 1891 James & Elizabeth were living at Thimbleby, near Osmotherley, N. Yorks where James was a farmer. Head of the household was James' brother Richard [li.7.1], also a farmer & wood leader. They had a number of farm servants.

In 1901 James was working as a horse hind & he & Elizabeth were living at Moorholm, Cleveland. A hind was a skilled farm worker, usually married & with a tied cottage, in charge of horses. With them was a niece Elizabeth Peichers (4).

James was listed as a farmer in 1911 & he & Elizabeth were living at Whorl Hill, Whorlton, Northallerton. Elizabeth was described as farmer’s wife assisting in the dairy.   With them was Elizabeth’s brother John Blenkhorn, a farming labourer & 2 nieces, Elizabeth Alice Pitchers (Peichers in last census) aged 14 and Mala Blenkhorn (13).  There was also a farm labourer, Richard Robinson (50). 

James died on June 22nd, 1935 at 37 Mansfield Avenue, Thornaby-on-Tees, & was buried June 25th at Thornaby-on-Tees Cemetery. Probate was granted on August 1st, 1935 to widow Elizabeth,  Frederick Lister, tobacconist & John William Humphreys, railway guard.  James’ estate amounted to £7,307.0s.4d.

Elizabeth died on July 3rd, 1939 at 37 Mansfield Avenue, Thornaby-on-Tees & was buried on July 6th at Thornaby-on-Tees Cemetery. Probate was granted on August 29th, 1939 to Mahala Blenkhorn & Alice Elizabeth Pitchers, spinsters.  Her effects were £828.12s.8d.
