Mary Lister was the eighth child of John Lister and Elizabeth Tate born December 20th, 1807 at Ormesby & christened January 5th, 1808 at St Mary’s Catholic Chapel, Stockton. Her godparents were Mary & David Davison.
Mary married John Dale on March 3rd, 1835 at Eston, N. Yorks. Witnesses at the wedding were George Appleton & Thomas Hart. John was born January 25th & christened May 5th, 1793 at Eston, the son of Eleanor & John Dale, a shoemaker.
In 1841 Mary & John, a shoemaker, were living in Eston with children Elizabeth (5), Eleanor (3) & Jane (1).
The family were still living in Eston in 1851 but John was now a farm labourer. Children at home were Eleanor, Jane, Jackson (9) & Thomas (7). They also had 3 lodgers, all farm labourers. Daughter Elizabeth was working as a farm servant for farmer John Jackson in Wilton, N.Yorks.
Mary & John continued to live in Eston, now at King William Rd, & in 1861 John was now a blacksmith striker. Daughter Elizabeth was now back at home & described as a charwoman. Son Jackson was an engine fireman & Thomas was a horse driver. There was also an illegitimate grandson with the family, John Lister Dale, aged 2. There is a christening for John Lister Dale on August 14th, 1858 at Eston, son of Elizabeth Dale.
Daughter Jane married William Carter in 1862 at Eston. Son Jackson married Martha Hill in 1866 at Eston & son Thomas married Elizabeth A Suggett in 1866 at Eston. Thomas became an ironstone miner.
In 1871 Mary & John were living in a Tithe Cottage, Johnson’s Yard, Eston, next door to Mary’s widowed brother Robert Lister & family. John was described as a helper in the blacksmith’s shop. Grandson John Lister Dale was still living with them & aged 12 was a labourer in the ironstone mine.
Mary died at Old Eston in 1877 aged 70 & was buried on April 13th at Eston.
John died in 1879 & was buried on October 25th at Christchurch, Eston.
