Thomas Pallister [p.1.2.4.1]

Thomas Pallister was the first child of John Pallister & Ellinor Yealder born at Windlestone & christened March 8th, 1778 at Auckland St Andrew, Co Durham.

Thomas married Sarah Dodds on November 16th, 1816 at Auckland, St Andrew.  Sarah was christened March 26th, 1789 at Whitworth, Co Durham, the daughter of Elizabeth & John Dodds.

The Durham County Advertiser of September 8th, 1827 shows Thomas being appointed gamekeeper to Sir Robert Johnson Eden for Windleston & Merrington. He was also the appointed gamekeeper in 1828 & 1829.

Thomas is recorded in the Poll Books of 1832 as living at Windlestone & having property at Witton Gilbert, Co Durham. This property was inherited from his uncle William Yealder of Witton Gilbert.

Thomas was still gamekeeper for Sir Robert Johnson Eden in 1836, now for Windlestone, Merrington & West Auckland.

In 1841 Thomas was still living at Windlestone where he was a game keeper.  With him were wife Sarah, son William (20) a blacksmith, daughter Elizabeth (20), John (15) a joiner, Thomas (15) a joiner’s apprentice, & daughters Jane & Elenor (10).

By 1851 Thomas & Sarah were living at Middridge, Shildon, Co Durham & Thomas was now a labourer.  Son Thomas was still at home & working as a shoemaker journeyman, & daughter Ellinor was a general servant.  Also living with them was William Hodgson (22) also a journeyman shoemaker.  Daughter Jane was working as a house servant for a 70 year old spinster, Elizabeth Johnson, at 27 North Bailey, St Mary le Bow, Durham City at the time of the census. Son John was lodging with Edward Dodds (31), a blacksmith & family at the blacksmith’s shop in Fore Bondgate St, Bishop Auckland, Co Durham & John was a blacksmith journeyman.

Thomas died on January 22nd , 1858 at Middridge.  His will was proved by son Thomas, a boot & shoe maker, & his effects were under £20.

In 1861 son Thomas was still living in Middridge with his wife Margaret where he was a publican & boot & shoe maker.

(There is a death for Sarah Pallister in April-June 1857 in Auckland.)

p.1.2.4.1.6 Eleanor Pallister christened October 25th, 1829 at Auckland St Andrew; died Oct-December 1862 at Middridge, Co Durham
