Margaret Pallister [p.1.6.1.1.]

Margaret Pallister was the only child of Cuthbert Pallister & Mary Lowes born at Iveston, Co Durham & christened on June 17th, 1792 at All Saints, Lanchester.

Margaret was bequeathed a sum of £20 a year from the profits of properties owned by her father who died in 1823. She was also to receive half of his furniture, the other half going to her mother. The details of her father's will are shown on Cuthbert's page.

On May 10th, 1824 Margaret married Thomas Hodgshon at St Mary's Whickham, Co Durham. They were married by licence & witnesses at the wedding were Ann Hodgshorn & George Hodgshorn. Thomas was born in 1789 at Whickham, the son of Elizabeth Brown & George Hodgshon, a butcher.

Margaret & Thomas lived for a number of years at Swalwell, nr Whickham where Thomas was a butcher like his father. They had 4 children.

In 1831 one of their children, Mary Anna, sadly died, aged just 3 years.

Margaret died in 1841, aged 48 years, at Swalwell & was buried on February 14th at Whickham.

At the time of the census in 1841 widowed Thomas was still living at Swalwell with his parents. Both he & his father were butchers. Margaret & Thomas' daughter Elizabeth, aged 10, was also living there. A near neighbour of the Hodgshons was Margaret's 85 year old mother, Mary Pallister, who had a young female servant.

Thomas remarried on September 12th, 1843 at St Paul's, Winlaton, Co Durham. His second wife was Ann Gray, born August 19 th , 1798 at Tanfield, the daughter of Joseph Gray, an agent. She was from Garesfield at the time of her wedding. Witnesses at the wedding were Joseph & Edward Gray & M. Nicholson.

Thomas & Ann could not be found at the time of the 1851 census but recently married son George & his wife Eliza Phillips were living at Lovaine Place, Newcastle-upon-Tyne where George was a draper & tailor. Visiting them was George's sister Elizabeth. Son Cuthbert was also living in Newcastle at Westgate St & was an ironmonger.

In 1861 Thomas & Ann were living at the Butcher's Shop, Swalwell & Thomas was described as a butcher & farmer of 56 acres. Thomas' daughter Elizabeth was with them at this time & also living there were 2 house servants & a journeyman butcher.

A notice in the Newcastle Journal of April 8th, 1867 stated that Thomas was giving up farming & selling his stock & farming implements.

Thomas died on April 25th, 1867, aged 78 at Swalwell & was buried at Whickham. Thomas' will was proved by son George Hodgshon of Newcastle, a clothier & woollen draper, & Charles Armstrong of Newcastle, a land agent. His effects were under £600.

Thomas was a property owner of some standing as shown in an advert in the Newcastle Journal of May 15th, 1867. The property for sale by Thomas’ executors included a freehold shop & 5 roomed dwelling house in Swalwell, a freehold butcher’s shop & 8 roomed dwelling house at Whickham, plus stables & piggeries etc, and a copyhold field called ‘The Pit Close Field’ at the west end of Whickham. Later in June 1867 a substantial amount of fine household furniture was up for auction. (Newcastle Journal, June 19th, 1867)

In 1871 widow Ann had returned to her birthplace – Tanfield - & was living at Sheep Hill, & described as an annuitant.

At the time of the 1881 census Ann was visiting Jane Handcock, a 68 year old widow who was described as a farmer & timber merchant, & some of her family. They were at Barcus Close Farm, Tanfield.

Ann died on August 21 st , 1885, aged 87, her death being registered at Lanchester (includes Tanfield).
