Margaret Pallister [p.1.6.3.1.5.4]

 

Margaret Pallister was the fourth child of Robert Pallister & Rachael Blakey born at Burradon, Newcastle-upon-Tyne & christened July 21st, 1850 at Longbenton, Northumberland.

Margaret, her parents & sister Elizabeth were living at Camperdown, Longbenton in 1851. With them was grandmother Elizabeth Blakey.

In 1861 Margaret was still with her parents & 3 sisters & 1 brother at the Grey Horse Inn at Killingworth. The head of the household was her grandmother Elizabeth Blakey, a 74 year old inn keeper.

By 1871 Margaret had moved south to Stockton, Co Durham & was working as a cook/domestic servant for Annie Gray & her family at Blythewood House. The Gray family had been living in Blyth, Northumberland in 1861 & Margaret's family moved to near Blyth around this time which may be how Margaret came to be associated with them.

Margaret married William Mawlam on January 6th, 1877, at Stockton-on-Tees. William was the 4th son of Mary Ann & Thomas Mawlam, a customs house officer, christened November 28th, 1849 at Stockton-on-Tees.

In 1881 Margaret & William were living at 19 Vane St, Stockton & William was a blacksmith. They had a 3 year old daughter Lily.

Margaret & William were at 15 Vane St in 1891 & William was still a blacksmith. They now had 3 children – Lily, William (6) & Rose (3).

They continued to live at the same address & in 1901 William was now a foreman blacksmith. All 3 children were still at home. Lily was an assistant in a boot shop & William was an apprentice steam engine fitter & Rosy had no occupation.

In 1911 Margaret & William had moved to 17 Westbourne Terrace, Stockton & William had now retired. Daughter Rosy was still at home. Their home had 6 rooms. Son William, now married to Ethel was living at Sydney St, Stockton with their 2 year old daughter Irene. Daughter Lily had married James Henderson, a cinematograph film hirer, & they were living at 15 Newby Terrace, Stockton, with their daughter Julia Lily (1) & James' mother Elizabeth Henderson.

William died, aged 72, on December 19th, 1920 at 35 Westbourne Terrace, Stockton, & was buried on December 31st, 1920 at Durham Road Cemetrey, Stockton. He was described on the probate index as of 17 Westbourne Terrace.  Probate was granted on May 30th, 1921 to widow Margaret, daughter Lily Henderson (wife of James Henderson) & George Thomas Angus, assistant overseer.  His effects were £2,077.11s.6d.

Margaret died, aged 81, in 1930 & was buried on September 26th  at Durham Road Cemetrey, Stockton.
