William Pallister [p.1.6.3.1.5.5.]

William Pallister was the fifth child of Robert Pallister & Rachael Blakey born born at Burradon, Newcastle-upon-Tyne & christened December 24th, 1853 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

In 1861 William was living with his parents & 4 sisters at the Grey Horse Inn at Killingworth. The head of the household was his grandmother Elizabeth Blakey, a 74 year old inn keeper.

William was still at home in 1871, now 1 Country View, Cambois, Morpeth, Northumberland &, like his father, worked as a coal miner. He had 2 younger sisters at home.

William & his widowed mother Rachael, a dressmaker, were living at 3 Davison St, Cowpen, Northumberland in 1881. They had a 23 year old boarder, Thomas Moore, also a coal miner like William.

Later in 1881 on September 12th William married Isabella Rhodes, the marriage being registered at Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Isabella was born August 24th, 1859 at Cowpen, Northumberland, the daughter of Margaret & Luke Rhodes, a coal miner.

In 1891 William & Isabella were living at Cowpen, Northumberland & William was working as a coal trimmer. With them at the time of the census was niece Sarah E Rhodes, aged 10. Sarah was the daughter of Isabella’s older brother John & his wife Charlotte Marson. Sadly Charlotte died in 1883 at the age of 24 & it appears that daughter Sarah was cared for by William & Isabella & their other daughter, Margaret, was looked after by her father & grandparents.

By 1901 William, still a coal trimmer, & Isabella were living at 1 Percy St South, Newsham & South Blyth, Northumberland. Niece Sarah Rhodes was still living with them & was a dressmaker working from home with her own account.

In 1911 William & Isabella were living at 15 Goschen St, Cowpen Quay, Blyth & William was still a coal trimmer employed by the North Eastern Railway. Living with them was niece Sarah Ellen who had married Mr Miller who was now sadly deceased.

William died, aged 80, in July-September 1933, his death being registered at Tynemouth, Northumberland.

The 1939 register shows widowed Isabella still at 15 Goschen St, Blyth.  With her was niece Sarah Ellen who was now married to Henry Hodgson, a music teacher

Widowed Isabella died on August 6th, 1941 at 15 Goschen St, Blyth.  Probate was granted to niece Sarah Ellen Hodgson (nee Rhodes), wife of Henry Hodgson.  Isabella’s effects were £375.
