Isabella Pallister was the sixth child of Robert Pallister & Rachael Blakey born August 28th, 1855 at Burradon, Newcastle-upon-Tyne & christened May 19th, 1857 at All Saints, Newcastle.
In 1861 Isabella was living with her parents & 3 sisters & 1 brother at the Grey Horse Inn at Killingworth. The head of the household was her grandmother Elizabeth Blakey, a 74 year old inn keeper.
Isabella was working as a domestic servant for Annie & William Bell, a butcher, at 28 Westmorland St, Westgate, Newcastle in 1871. Her parents had moved north to the Morpeth area.
Isabella married Robert Allan on August 31st, 1872, at Cambois, Morpeth. Robert was born Jan-March 1851 at Belford, Northumberland, the son of Eleanor & Robert Allan, an agricultural labourer.
By 1881 Isabella & Robert were living at 6 Sinkers Row, Cambois Colliery, Bedlington, Morpeth & Robert was a miner at the colliery. They had 3 children – Robert (7), Elizabeth (5) & Ellen (2). (Robert & Isabella had had another son, Robert, who had sadly died in infancy on November 29th, 1872.)
Isabella & Robert were still at Cambois in 1891, now at 22 Store Row, with children Robert, a coal miner like his father, Elizabeth, Ellen & new additions Peter (10), Rachel (5) & Maggie (1).
In 1901 Isabella & Robert were still living at 22 Store Row & Robert was now a deputy overman at the coal mine. Children at home were Robert & Peter, both coal miners, Helen (Ellen), Rachel, Maggie, Jane A (9), Bella (8) & May (5). Also with the family was grandson William Watson (4).
In 1911 the family were still living at the same address in Cambois Colliery & Robert was a deputy overman working underground at the colliery. Son Peter was a hewer at the coal mine, Jane Ann was a dressmaker, Isabella & May were both domestics at home & their most recent child, Pallister Allan, was at school. The census shows that Isabella & Robert had had 11 children, 10 of whom were still living. Since their home had just 4 rooms, conditions must have been very cramped for such a household!
Robert died on February 13th, 1934 at 22 Store Row, Cambois & was buried on February 17th at St Peter’s, Cambois. Probate was granted on August 8th, 1940 in London to son Peter Allan, miner. Robert’s effects were £271.9s.
The 1939 census shows widowed Isabella still living at 22 Stone Row. She was noted as incapacitated. Living with her were son Pallister, a colliery deputy overman, son Peter who was described as incapacitated war pensioner & daughter Margaret, doing unpaid domestic duties.
Isabella died on April 5th, 1942 at 22 Store Row, Cambois & was buried April 8th at St Peter’s, Cambois. Administration of her estate was granted in Llandudno on April 28th, 1942 to son Peter Allan, miner. Her effects were £270.
