Emma Pallister [p.1.6.5.3.12]

Emma Pallister was the twelfth child of John Pallister & Sarah Thompson christened September 1st, 1841 at Lanchester.

Emma was living with her parents & brothers & sister at Hornsby Hill in 1851.

In 1861 Emma was acting as housekeeper for her widowed father John at Hornsby Hill.

On January 21st, 1862 Emma married George Garthwaite at All Saints, Lanchester. George was 23 & Emma was 20 at the time of the wedding. George was described as a farmer of Fenn Hall & Emma was of Hornsby Hill. Witnesses at the wedding were James P Pallister (Emma's brother) & church warden Frederick James Laycock. George was christened July 28th, 1839 at Wolsingham, Co Durham, the son of Jane & Aaron Garthwaite, a farmer of 300 acres.

A report in the Shields Daily News of February 8th, 1868 tells of a serious fire in the farmyard of Mr Garthwaite, Fenn Hall.  The damage was estimated to be £300-£400 which was only partly covered by insurance.  The farm it was noted was the property of Sir George Clavering.

In 1871 George & Emma were living at Lanchester where George was a gardener. They had 2 sons – Aaron (8) & John George (6).

In 1881 George & Emma were still at Lanchester living at Summer Hill. George was now a farmer. At home were John G who was a pupil teacher & daughter Elizabeth (4). Son Aaron had died in 1879, aged just 16 years.

George & Emma were still at Summer Hill in 1891 & George was now described as a general labourer. Daughter Elizabeth was still at home & there was a new son Henry E (9). They also had a boarder John Stephenson, a station clerk.

By 1901 George & Emma had moved to Horsforth, nr Leeds, W. Yorks. George was working as a cattleman on a farm. Elizabeth J was still at home, as was Henry E, a clerk. Son John G had moved to W. Yorks by 1891 & was living with his family near Leeds in 1901.

George & Emma were living at 34 Hill Top Avenue, Leeds in 1911 & George was now a retired farmer. Son Henry Ernest was still living with them & was now a woollen manufacturer's clerk.

George died in Jan-March 1928, aged 88, his death being registered in Leeds.

Emma of 25 Northbrook St, Leeds died aged 88, & was buried on March 28th, 1930 at St Matthew, Chapel Allerton, Leeds North.
