Clara Pallister was the first child of Dorothy Pallister born May 21st, 1869 in Lanchester, Co. Durham.
In 1871 Clara & her mother Dorothy were living with Dorothy’s parents, Margaret & William Pallister, in 1871, at Ormsby Hill, Lanchester.
Clara’s mother married William Forrest Thain in 1872 & at the time of the 1881 census she & her mother & step-father were living at East Bolton, Alnwick, Northumberland where William was a domestic servant & butler to Thomas S Clarke, a barrister & Justice of the Peace. She had 2 half brothers & 2 half sisters.
In 1891 Clara was working as a general servant for farmer Joseph Robinson & his family at Low Friarside, Tanfield, Co Durham. Also working for the farmer was Thomas Waugh.
Clara married Thomas Waugh in Jan-March 1894 at Gateshead. Thomas was born September 16th, 1870 at Rookhope, Co Durham, the son of Ann & Thomas Waugh, an iron miner.
In 1901 Clara & Thomas were living at 40 Newton St, Bensham, Gateshead where Thomas was a grocer, shop keeper working from home. They had 4 children at this time – John W (6), Margaret A (4), Ada (3) & Annie (11 months).
The family were still at the same address in 1911 & Thomas was a grocer & general dealer. Son John William was still at home & working for his father as a general carter. Daughters Margaret, Ada & Annie were still at home & there were 2 new additions to the family – Hilda (8) & Thomas (4).
The 1939 register shows Clara & Thomas living at 1 Stephenson St, Gateshead & Thomas was now a coal dealer & general dealer. Still at home were Ada & Annie, both doing domestic duties, & Hilda who was a shopkeeper.
Clara died on May 28th, 1951 at 1 Stephenson St, Gateshead. Administration of her estate was granted to son John William, coal merchant, & daughter Hilda Waugh. Her effects were £458.16s.7d.
Thomas died on June 29th, 1951 at 1 Stephenson St, Gateshead. Administration of his estate was granted to son John William, coal merchant, & daughter Hilda Waugh. His effects were £1,154.182.
