Hannah Pallister was the fourth child of John Pallister & Sarah Thompson christened May 30th, 1822 at Lanchester, Co Durham.
Hannah married Robert Siddle on December 24 th , 1843 at Lanchester, Co Durham. Both Hannah & Robert signed the register. At the time of the wedding Robert was a butcher living at Shotley Bridge, Medomsley Parish & Hannah was living at Hornsby Hill. Witnesses at the wedding were John Pallister, William Pallister & George Martin. Robert was born February 8th, 1819 at Shotley Bridge, Co Durham, the son of Hannah Turnbull & John Siddle, a labourer & christened into the Wesleyan Methodist Church on December 28th, 1823 at Mosswood, Shotley. Robert & 5 sisters & a brother were all christened on the same day.
Hannah had given birth to a baby girl in November 1843, registered as Elizabeth Sidles Pallister. Elizabeth was christened at Lanchester on the same day as her parents married, December 24th, 1843.
In 1851 Hannah & Robert were living at New Cassop, Durham where Robert was a butcher. They had 4 children – Elizabeth (7), Hannah Ann (5), Robert John (3) & Sarah Jane (8 months). Living with them at the time of the census was Hannah’s brother, James Pallister (15), an apprentice butcher. Sadly Sarah Jane died later that year on December 18th aged 15 months.
By 1861 Hannah & Robert were living at Commercial Row, Coxhoe, Co Durham & Robert was now an innkeeper. Children at home were Elizabeth, Hannah Ann, Robert John, Sarah (7), Frederick J M (3) & Thomas (1). The last 3 children were all born at Kelloe, suggesting they had spent some time living there.
Daughter Elizabeth married John Walker, a railway engine driver, in 1862.
In 1871 the family had moved to 3 High St, Whitworth, Spennymoor, Co Durham & Robert was again described as a butcher, as was son Robert John. Also at home were Sarah, Frederick, George Walton (9) & James (6). Son Thomas was not found in the census & there is a death registered for Thomas Siddle, aged 10, registered in Oct-December 1869 at Auckland which includes Whitworth.
The Liverpool Mercury of October 12th, 1878 shows Robert listed as petitioning for liquidation of his business.
Hannah & Robert were still at the same address in 1881 & only sons George & James were still at home, both working as butchers. Son Robert John had married Annie Walls in 1877 & in 1881 they & their family were living in Sunderland Bridge, Durham where Robert was still a butcher. Daughter Sarah also married in 1877, on November 4th at Spennymoor. The 1881 census shows her & husband Ralph Allison, a butcher, & their young family living in Easington. With them was Sarah’s brother, Fred J M J Siddle, who was an unemployed bank clerk. Son Fred was in trouble with the law in October 1883. He & Thomas Whitfield, both of Spennymoor, were found guilty of having robbed an old retired farmer of £14 after following him from the Lord Raglan Hotel where he had been drinking. Fred, a late bank clerk, & Whitfield pleaded guilty to stealing the money but as they were drunk at the time could not remember knocking the old man down. They were both sentenced to 3 months hard labour.
Son George served with the Army in Egypt & sadly was killed in Assouan in 1887.
Son James married Isabella Reed in April-June 1888. By 1911 he & Isabella had 8 children & were living at West Hartlepool where James was a farm labourer
By 1891 Hannah & Robert had moved to Clappersgate, Easington, Co Durham & Robert was now described as a general labourer at the age of 72! Son Frederick who was now at home was a butcher.
Hannah died on February 15th, 1897, aged 75, her death being registered in Durham.
Robert died in December 1897, aged 78, the death being registered in Durham.
