James Peace Pallister [p.1.6.5.3.9]

James Peace Pallister was the ninth child of John Pallister & Sarah Thompson born at Greencroft, Lanchester & christened August 7th, 1834 at Lanchester.

In 1841 James was living at Hornsby Hill, Lanchester with his parents & 8 brothers & sisters.

At the time of the 1851 census James was with his sister Hannah & her husband Robert Siddle, a butcher, & their family at New Cassop, Co Durham. James was an apprentice butcher.

On June 5th, 1858 James married Mary Ann Hall at All Saints, Lanchester. Both were 24 years old at the time of the wedding & both signed the register. Witnesses at the wedding were Cuthbert Hall & Joseph Thompson Pallister, James' brother. Mary Ann was christened August 16th , 1833 at Lanchester, Co Durham, the daughter of Margaret & Cuthbert Hall, a woodman.

James & Mary Ann were living at Toll Bar, Greencroft, Lanchester in 1861. James was a mason.

Mary Ann died on July 11th, 1867, aged 33, & was buried on July 13th, at All Saints, Lanchester, alongside her father Cuthbert Hall & baby sister Margaret who died aged 3 years.

On May 19th 1868 James was listed in the Durham Diocese marriage bonds and allegations as of Lanchester & a widower.   He married Hannah Hunter, at St Mary’s, Gateshead. Hannah was born at Marley Hill, Whickham & christened December 23rd, 1849 at Whickham, Co Durham, the daughter of Jane Mitchelson & Thomas Hunter, a banksman at Whickham Colliery.

In 1871 James & Hannah were living at Ornsby Hill, Lanchester. They had 2 children – John Thomas (1) & a 3 week old daughter Sarah Jane. James, who was described as a mason, was living next door to borthers William & Joseph, also stone cutters & masons respectively.

James & Hannah were still at Ornsby Hill in 1881 & James was still a mason. Son John Thomas was still at home & there were 2 new arrivals – Hannah (5) & 4 month old Ethel May. Daughter Sarah Jane was visiting her grandparents Jane & Thomas Hunter at the time of the census at Oakeys Cottages, Tanfield. Lodging with James & Hannah was James’ nephew John Pallister (27), who was a mason & sculptor. John was the son of James’ brother William Pallister, now deceased.

In 1891 James & Hannah were still at Ornsby Hill, now at number 2 Ornsby Hill Terrace. Son John was a gardener, Sarah Jane was a milliner & Hannah was a dressmaker’s apprentice. Also at home was Ethel May & James V (5).

Daughter Sarah Jane married Francis Thompson in July-September 1895 at Gateshead.  In 1911 Sarah & Francis were living at Hebburn, South Shields with their 2 children & Francis was a timber stock taker for shipbuilding.

In Oct-December 1896 son John Thomas & daughter Hannah married in Gateshead.  John married Catherine Leach & by 1911 they had 4 children & were living at Hunslet, Leeds where John was an engineer’s labourer.  Hannah married Matthew George Clark, a woodman, & in 1911 they were living at Upper Greencroft, Lanchester with their 8 children.

James was still working as a mason on the Greencroft Estate, Lanchester in 1901 & he & Hannah were still at Ormsby Hill. Ethel May was still at home, as was James Vincent, a solicitor’s junior clerk.

Daughter Ethel May married William Nicholson, a farmer, in Jan-March 1903 at Lanchester.  By the time of the 1911 census Ethel & William had 2 children & were living in Godstone, Surrey.

Hannah died in 1905, aged 53, & was buried on September 19th at Lanchester.

Son James married Gertrude Baker Williams on July 15th, 1909 at Lanchester.

James died on January 31st, 1912 at 3 Lonsdale Terrace, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, the home of son James Vincent & his family.  Probate was granted on February 12th, 1912 to son James Vincent, secretary.  His effects were £105.

Son James served with the RAF during WW1 & at that time his civilian occupation was given as carpenter.

In 1939 daughter Hannah & husband Matthew Clark, now a retired woodman, were living at Hannah’s parent’s old home, 2 Ornsby Hill, Lanchester with 5 children still at home.
