Hannah Pallister was the first child of Thomas Pallister & Frances Lamb (nee Brown) born January 7th, 1837 at Birtley, Co Durham.
In 1851 Hannah, her parents & 2 brothers were living at Look Out, Birtley.
Hannah married Mark Pratt on November 14 th , 1857 at the parish church of St Mary & St Cuthbert, Chester-le-Street. Both were living at Lumley at the time of the marriage & Mark was a collier. Hannah signed the register but Mark was only able to make his mark. Mark was born November 20 th , 1832 at Portobello, Chester-le-Street, Co Durham, the son of Margaret Peal & John Pratt, a collier. Witnesses were John Tennant & John Burnip (parish clerk).
In 1861 Hannah & Mark were living at Colliery Houses, Sherburn with a 1 year old son Thomas who had been born at Pittington. Mark was a coal miner.
In 1871 they were still at Colliery Cottages, Sherburn Village & Mark was still a coal miner. They had 3 children with them – Margaret (8), Frances J (4), & John (1). Son Thomas had died in 1862 & sadly John also died later in 1871 & Margaret in 1873.
Hannah & Mark were living at the same address in 1881 with children Frances J & Margaret A (6).
In 1891 they continued to live at Sherburn Village & at home were daughters Margaret A & Mary (9). Mark was still a coal miner. Daughter Frances Jane had married Thomas Grayson, a coal miner, in 1889.
Mark died on October 25th, 1893, aged 60, at Sherburn & was buried on October 27th at Sherburn, Co Durham. It appears from a report in the Durham County Advertiser of November 3rd, 1893 that an inquest recorded a verdict of death from blood poisoning due to an injury to George’s arm. George sustained the injury whilst working as a deputy at the Lady Durham Pit, Sherburn, which resulted in his gradual decline.
In 1901 widowed Hannah was living with her daughter Margaret A, who had married Henry Burn, a coal hewer, in 1896, & their 2 young children. They were living at Hall Garth Lane, Sherburn. Daughter Mary was working as a housemaid at Bede College, Durham at this time & was to marry Henry Mogerley in 1904.
Hannah died in August 1904 at Sherburn aged 67, & was buried at Sherburn.
