John Cuthbert Pallister [p.1.6.8.7]

John Cuthbert Pallister was the seventh child of Thomas Pallister & Mary Blackburn born at North Side, Birtley, Co Durham & christened August 29th, 1824 at Chester-le-Street, Co Durham.

In 1841 John was living with his parents & sister & 3 brothers at Queen St, Thornley, Co Durham.

John married Maria Lumley on October 9th, 1847 at Chester-le-Street. They were married by banns & the witnesses were John Lumley & John Burnip, parish clerk. Both John & Maria were unable to sign & made their mark. Maria was born c1825 at Chester-le-Street, the daughter of John Lumley, a carpenter.

In 1851 John & Maria were living at Birtley, Co Durham & John was a coal miner. They have a 2 year old son John. Living next door was his younger brother Robert & his wife Mary Ann.

By 1861 John & Maria were living at Frume Cottages, Birtley & John was now a blacksmith. They now had 4 children – John, Thomas (9), Maria (6) & Isabella (11 months).

The family were still living in Birtley in 1871, now at Harris Bank. John was still a blacksmith & son John was a draper & Thomas was a joiner. Maria & Isabella were both still at home.

At the Durham Agricultural Show in August 1879 John, of Harras Bank House, Birtley won first prize of £1.10s. for his mastiff dog Sultan. (Durham Dounty Advertiser)

In 1881 John & Maria were living at Harris (Harras) Bank House (Drapers Shop) where Maria & daughters Maria & Isabella were all described as drapers. John was still working as a blacksmith. They had an 18 year old general servant, Mary Ann Raven.

Maria died on December 24th, 1887, aged 63, in Birtley, Chester-le-Street.  Her will was proved by widowed John & sons John, of 27 Hendon Burn Avenue, Sunderland, a county customs timber measurer, & Thomas of 50 Greenesfield Terrace, Askew Rd, Gateshead.  Her personal estate was valued at £1,771.4s.

In 1891 widowed John, now retired, was living with daughter Maria who had married William Ironsides, a draper. Maria’s occupation was given as milliner. They had a 7 year old daughter Isabella Edith Maria (listed as Edith) & a general servant, Sarah Neuman.

John died on December 31st, 1891, aged 68, at Birtley.  Administration of his will was granted on February 18th, 1892 to his daughter Maria, wife of William Ironsides & his effects were £38.17s.
