Thomas Stephenson [s.4]

Thomas Stephenson was the fourth child of Thomas Stephenson & Mary Cooke christened February 11th, 1781 at Kildale, Yorks.

There is a marriage for Thomas Stephenson to Mary Dunning, aged 21, on January 2nd, 1801 at Stokesley.  (Witnesses Thomas Smith & Robert/Thomas Dunning)
There is a death for Mary Stephenson aged 28 who was buried on May 1st, 1818 at Stokesley.

Thomas married Dorothy Pallister on August 22nd, 1819 at Egglescliffe, after the reading of banns.  The marriage appears in the Archbishop of York’s list of marriage bonds & allegations showing that Thomas was a widower of Stokesley, a husbandman & Dorothy was a spinster of Aislaby, Egglescliffe parish. A bond of £200 was held to be paid by Thomas & Thomas Appleby, a damask weaver of Stockton, if the marriage did not take place.  Both Thomas & Dorothy were unable to sign & made their mark on the wedding register. Witnesses at the wedding were Isabella Hale (X), William Dixon & George Stevenson.  Dorothy was born at Burdon, the daughter of Richard Pallister & christened August 30th 1789 at Haughton le Skerne, (which includes Burdon) Durham.

In 1841 Thomas & Dorothy were living at West End, Stokesley & Thomas was an agricultural labourer. Their son Thomas (20), a shoe maker was at home at the time of the census.

In 1851 Thomas (69) & Dorothy (61) were living at Stokesley, Yorks & Thomas was an agricultural labourer.

Dorothy died in 1853 at Stokesley & was buried on January 19th, 1853 at St Peter & St Paul, Stokesley . 

In 1861 Thomas was living on his own at Stokesley & still working as a farm labourer in his 80s!

Thomas died on October 5th, 1861 at Stokesley & his will was proved by his son Thomas, a shoemaker of Stokesley, & Francis Barr Martin, grocer of Stokesley.  His effects were under £200.
