Thomas Stainsby [sb.6]

Thomas Stainsby was the sixth child of Thomas Stainsby & Elizabeth Sunley born October 17th, 1810, christened November 18th, 1810 at All Saints, Kirkbymoorside, Yorks.

Thomas married Mary Lister on June 26th, 1839 at the parish church of Ormesby, Yorks. Both Thomas & Mary were of full age & Thomas’ occupation was given as a stone mason living at Pickering. Mary was the daughter of Ann Pattison & Thomas Lister, a labourer of Ormesby, christened October 24th, 1814 at Ormesby.
Witnesses at the wedding were William Marley & John Lowther.

Between 1840 & 1851 Thomas was described as either ‘farmer’ or ‘stone mason’ on the christening records of his children.

In 1841 Mary & Thomas were living at the Rising Sun Inn, Linthorpe with their 1 year old son John. Thomas was a brick layer & also listed at the same address was Ann Lister (20), Mary’s sister, a servant.

By 1851 Thomas & Mary were living at Linthorpe, Yorks where Thomas was a brick layer employed on a farm. They had 4 children – John (10), Mary Ann (9), Thomas (7) & Elizabeth (2). They also had a niece visiting them, Jane Robinson aged 4, the daughter of Mary’s sister Ann Lister who had married Robert Robinson.

Thomas is listed in Slater’s Commercial Directory of Durham, Northumberland & Yorkshire for 1855 as a retailer of beer from Linthorpe.

In 1861 they were living at New Linthorpe & at this time Thomas was a publican of the Cleveland Inn as well as a brick layer. At home were children Thomas, an apprentice silversmith, Elizabeth & William (9).

Thomas & Mary (listed as Hamsly in Ancestry.co.uk index) were still living at Linthorpe in 1871 & Thomas was described as a builder. Daughter Elizabeth was still at home, as was William who was also a builder like his father. There is a record in the North Riding Landowners register of 1871 of Thomas Stainsby of Linthorpe owning 3 acres of land at a rental of £41-10shillings.

Thomas died on February 6th, 1878 aged 67, at Linthorpe,  Middlesbrough & was buried on February 8th, 1878 at Linthorpe Cemetery.  His will was proved at York on November 24th, 1882 by son William, a builder, & daughter Elizabeth, wife of Charles Wesley Graham.  Thomas’ effects amounted to £288.19s.

In 1881 Mary was living with daughter Elizabeth who was married to Charles Graham, a watchmaker & jeweler. They were living at Linthorpe Rd, Linthorpe & Elizabeth & Charles had a daughter Emily.

Mary died aged 72 on May 25th, 1884 at the  Cleveland Hotel, Linthorpe, Middlesbrough & was buried on May 28th, 1884 at Linthorpe Cemetery.

A notice in the Daily Gazette for Middlesbrough of November 19th, 1885 showed the Cleveland Hotel was to be let & tenders to be sent to son William Stainsby at 67 Newport Rd, Linthorpe.

sb.6.2 Mary Ann Stainsby christened April 5th, 1842 at West Acklam, Yorks; buried December 14th, 1904 at New Linthorpe Cemetery, Middlesbrough
sb.6.3 Thomas Stainsby December 16th, 1843 at West Acklam, Yorks
sb.6.4 Elizabeth Stainsby christened November 17th, 1848 at West Acklam, Yorks; buried on January 22nd, 1886 at New Linthorpe Cemetery, Middlesbrough
sb.6.5 William Stainsby born December 1st, 1851 at Linthorpe, christened January 4th, 1852 at West Acklam, Yorks, buried April 25th, 1923 at St Aidan's cemetery, Grangetown, Co. Durham
