Thomas Lister was the first child of William Lister & Elisabeth Metcalf christened June 19th, 1743 at Welbury, N. Yorks.
Thomas married Ann Wake on April 22nd, 1793 at Welbury. Witnesses at the wedding were Michael Meek & William Mankin.
Thomas, a yeoman, was buried on September 15th, 1818 at St Leonard’s, Welbury. His estate was £2000. Robert left a will which was executed by his brothers Robert & William Lister, both farmers of Welbury. To them he left his real & personal estate upon the following trusts to his wife Ann & son Thomas. ‘All his …. in the farm whether held as tenant under Lord Harewood; all his furniture & household implements, plate, linen, beds, horses, cattle, corn& hay stacks, corn in the barn & the residue of his goods & chattels in equal shares. He gave all his ready money, security for personal estate & all his real estate upon trust firstly to pay all his debts & funeral expenses & then to his daughters Ann & Elizabeth & sons Thomas & Robert £400 each when they reached 21 years of age. The residue of his estate to be divided equally as tenants in common but not to take possession of such until the youngest reaches 21.’
Daughter Elizabeth married George Dixon, a farmer, on April 25th, 1829 at St Cuthbert’s, Darlington.
Sons Robert & Thomas had not married by 1861 & were farming together at Lingy Moor, Moulton, N. Yorks. Robert decided to marry after Thomas’s death in 1867 – he married his housekeeper Elizabeth Thirkell in 1868. She had been with him since the 1851 census & had a daughter, Ann Thirkell. On Ann’s marriage in 1869 she gave her name as Ann Thirkell Lister.
