Robert William Winder [wi.4.5.3]

Robert William Winder was the son of Robert Winder & Letitia Boswell born c1827 at Edmonton, Middlesex.

In 1841 Robert was living with his family at Lower Edmonton, London. His father, Robert, tragically died when he was trampled by one of his own coach horses in 1849.

On December 5th, 1846 Robert married Maria Augusta Wetherilt at St John’s, Hampstead, Middlesex.  Robert was a coachman at the time of the wedding & both gave their address as Hampstead.   Witnesses at the wedding were John Ormond Wetherilt, Mary Ann Wetherilt & Anne Winder, Robert’s sister. Maria was born June 11th 1825 at 24 Hart St, Bloomsbury & christened August 9th, 1825 at St Giles in the Fields, Holborn, the daughter of Mary & Charles Wetherilt, a chair carver.

By 1851 Robert & Maria were living at 2 High Path, Edmonton. He was an omnibus proprieter & had a son Charles O, aged 2.

In 1861 they were living at 1 Willshire Place, St Johns Hackney & Robert was a fly proprieter with son Charles.

In 1867 Robert became the proprietor the ‘The Horse & Groom’ Walworth Road which he left in 1868.

By 1871 Robert had become a licensed victualler at the Haverstock Arms, Hampstead. Charles was still at home & also living there was Mary Ann Jones (18), a barmaid who was the daughter of Robert’s sister Mary Ann Winder who had married John Jones.

Robert died on January 28th, 1873 at the Haverstock Arms aged 46. Maria died soon afterwards on October 11th, aged 44, at Haverstock Arms, Haverstock Hill & was buried on October 17th, 1873, at All Saints, Edmonton.  Son Charles administered her estate.

Admin. of the effects of Robert William Winder late of the "Haverstock" Tavern, Haverstock Hill in the Couny of Middx Licensed Victualler who died 28 Jan 1873 at the "Haverstock" was granted at the Principle Registry to Charles Ormond Winder of the "Noah's Ark" Public House 313 Oxford St. in the said county, Licensed Victualler the Son and only next of Kin.
