Samuel Freeth was the third child of William Freeth & Sarah Gutteridge christened November 24th, 1833 at Smethwick, Staffs.
In 1841 & 1851 Samuel was living at home at Roebuck Lane, Smethwick with his parents & siblings. In 1851 Samuel was working as a glass maker.
Samuel was still living at home at Roebuck Lane in 1861 with his parents & 3 brothers & 2 sisters. He was now a glass flattener.
Samuel married Jane Walford on July 14th, 1861 at Dudley, Staffs. Jane was born March 8th,1838 at Longden Wood, Pontesbury, Shropshire, the daughter of Ellen Carless & George Walford. Jane was working as a sempstress at the time of the 1861 census & was living at home with her brothers & widowed mother Ellen at Tipton, nr Dudley, Staffs.
In 1871 Samuel & Jane were living at Jockey St, Smethwick & Samuel was still a glass flattener. They had 4 children at this time – Jane Ellen (8), Sarah (6), Clara (3) & Anne (6 months). They had a servant Jane Harrod (13).
Samuel & Jane were still at Jockey St in 1881 & Samuel was a glass maker. At home were Jane Ellen & Sarah, both dressmakers & Annie. Daughter Clara had sadly died, aged 4.
By 1891 Samuel & Jane (Freesh in Ancestry.co.uk index) had moved to 9 Chatwin St, Smethwick & Samuel was a glass flattener again. Their 3 daughters were still at home – Jane Ellen & Sarah were still dressmakers & Annie was a milliner’s assistant.
Samuel died in January 31st, 1897, aged 63, the death being registered at Smethwick.
In 1901 widowed Jane was still at 9 Chatwin St with daughters Jane E, a dressmaker working at home with her own account, & Annie W, a draper’s assistant.
By 1911 both daughters Jane & Annie had left home & mother Jane was still living at the same address. With her was a visitor, Elizabeth Sedgley, a 77 year old widow.
Jane died May 31st, 1915, aged 77, at Smethwick, Staffs.
