Jane Hall [ha.3]

Jane Hall was the third child of John Hall & Margaret Slack, born Oct-December 1842 at South Hetton & christened September 3rd 1843 at Easington, Co Durham.

Jane was living at South Hetton in 1851 with her parents, 3 brothers & 1 sister. Her father was a coal miner.

In 1861 Jane was working as a servant for Mary & William Graham, a grocer, at Easington Lane, Hetton-le-Hole, Co Durham. Visiting at that time was a nephew of the Graham’s – William Hill (19).

Jane married John Speed [sp.1.6.1.5.2.3] on October 31st 1865, at the Parish Church, Sunderland. At the time of the marriage John was a cabinet maker & both gave their residence as 27 High St, Sunderland. John was born at Easington Lane & christened December 20th, 1837 at Hetton-le-Hole, Co Durham, the son of Elizabeth Dodds & Joseph Speed, a coal miner.

In 1871 Jane & John were living at Wheatley Hill, Wingate, Co Durham & John was a joiner. They had 2 children – John (5) & Joseph (3).

By 1881 they had moved to Durham City & were living at 28 Durham Row, Framwellgate Moor. John was a joiner at the coal mine & they now had 6 sons – John, a labourer at the coal mine, Joseph, Robert (10), William (7), Frederick (4) & Alfred (4 months).

In 1891 they were living at the same address & John was now described as a joiner. Sons at home were Joseph, a colliery screenman, Robert, a coal miner, William, a putter of coal, Frederick, a tailor, Alfred & Henry (7).

They continued to live at Durham Row in 1901 & John was now a cabinet maker & newsagent. At home were Joseph, a master over belt boys at the colliery, Robert, a shifter at the coal mine, James Wm, a hewer, Frederick, a brick layer, Alfred, a cabinet maker & Henry, a carman.

There is a death recorded for John Speed, aged 66, in Durham in July-September 1906.

In 1911 widowed Jane was still living at Framwellgate Moor, Durham with sons Joseph, a lamp lighter, Robert, a stoneman at the mine, (James) William, a coal miner hewer & Frederick, a bricklayer. It was noted on the census that all 7 children were still alive. 

Son Alfred had married Elizabeth Richardson from Framwellgate Moor in 1906. In 1911 Alfred & Elizabeth were living at Front St, Framwellgate Moore where Alfred was a joiner & cabinet maker, & they had a son John & a daughter Doris.

Jane died in October 1912, aged 69, & was buried on October 24th, 1912 at St Cuthbert's Anglican Church, Durham.

Son Frederick enlisted in 1915 & served with the Royal Engineers.  He gave the address of his next of kin as brother John Speed living at Blackhall Rocks, Co Durham.  Frederick was a bricklayer by trade & gave his address as Brick Row, Framwellgate Moor.  He served in Bangalore, India & in 1917 he received a severe gunshot wound to the thigh.  It appears that Frederick came to live at Brick Row, Framwellgate Moor after the war.

The 1939 register shows son Robert living at Easington & still single & working as a colliery stoneman.  He was living with Robert & Olive Scott & family. 
Son Alfred & his wife Elizabeth & family were living at 14 Lund Avenue, Durham in 1939 & Alfred was still a joiner.
Son John was living at 13 Seventh St, Easington by 1939 & he was now widowed (he had married Elizabeth Young in 1890).  John was now a retired coal miner & with him was his 24 year old son John, a ? worker at the coal mine.
Son Henry had married Alice Bignell in 1916 at Southampton Register Office & he served with the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry during WW1.  (When Henry enlisted he gave his address as Field House, New Seaham & his nearest relative was his brother John Speed of Blackhall Rocks.)   On leaving the forces he gave his address as 14 Robson St, Wheatley Hill, Co Durham.  The 1939 register shows Henry, a general labourer, & Alice & their 14 year old son William living at 30 Lansbury Drive, Chester-le-Street.

sp.1.6.1.5.2.3.5 Frederick Speed born 1877 at Sunderland Bridge, Durham & christened February 11th, 1877 at Croxdale, Durham; died at Front St, Framwellgate Moor & buried March 9th, 1933 at St Cuthbert’s, Durham

sp.1.6.1.5.2.3.6 Alfred Speed born January 21st, 1881 at Framwellgate Moor, Durham; died at Lund Ave, Framwellgate Moor & buried October 10th, 1955 at St Cuthbert’s, Durham
