In 1891 they were living at the same address & John was now described as a joiner. Sons at home were Joseph, a colliery screenman, Robert, a coal miner, William, a putter of coal, Frederick, a tailor, Alfred & Henry (7).

Son Alfred & his wife Elizabeth & family were living at 14 Lund Avenue, Durham in 1939 & Alfred was still a joiner.

Son Henry had married Alice Bignell in 1916 at Southampton Register Office & he served with the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry during WW1.  (When Henry enlisted he gave his address as Field House, New Seaham & his nearest relative was his brother John Speed of Blackhall Rocks.)   On leaving the forces he gave his address as 14 Robson St, Wheatley Hill, Co Durham.  The 1939 register shows Henry, a general labourer, & Alice & their 14 year old son William living at 30 Lansbury Drive, Chester-le-Street.
