William Pallister [p.1.6.5.3.3.]

William Pallister was the third child of John Pallister & Sarah Thompson born at Marsfield & was baptised by his grandfather Joseph Thompson on October 26th, 1820 at All Saints, Lanchester.

William's baptism

In 1841 William was living at Hornsby Hill, Lanchester with his parents & 8 brothers & sisters. William was described as a mason.

William married Margaret Thompson on December 3rd, 1848 at Gateshead, Co Durham. Margaret was born c1825 at Low Thornley, Co Durham, the daughter of Dorothy & John Thompson, a farmer.

In 1851 William & Margaret were living at Lanchester where William was a master stone mason.

They were living at Blackhill, Benfieldside, Co Durham in 1861 & William was now described as a mason & stone cutter. They had 2 children – Dorothy (9) & John (7).

In 1871 William & Margaret were living at Ormsby Hill, Lanchester with their 2 children. Also living with them was Clara Pallister, a granddaughter aged 1year old. This was the illigitimate daughter of Dorothy. Neighbours of William were his brothers James Peace Pallister & his family & Joseph Thompson Pallister & his family. Both James & Joseph were stone masons. Also living nearby was another brother, Thomas & his family, who was a farmer & butcher.

William died on August 9th, 1873, aged 52, at Ormsby Hill & was described as a stone cutter on his probate record.  He was buried on August 12th 1873 at Lanchester. His will was proved on September 12th, 1873 by his brother Thomas Pallister, butcher of Ormsby Hill.  His effects were under £100.

Widow Margaret was living with her brother Adam Thompson, a farmer of 75 acres, & sister Elizabeth Thompson at Winlaton, Co Durham in 1881. By 1881 William & Margaret’s daughter Dorothy was married to William F Thain, a butler to Thomas S Clarke, a barrister & Justice of the Peace. They were living at East Bolton, Northumberland with their 4 children & also Dorothy’s daughter Clara Pallister, aged 11. Dorothy’s brother, John, was living with his uncle James Peace Pallister at Ormsby Hill, & was unmarried & working as a mason & sculptor.

In 1891 Margaret, recorded as Paliester on the census, was still living with her brother & sister at Thompson’s Farm, Winlaton. Son John (Palliser on census), still single, was boarding with Matthew Brown & family, a contractor in the building trade, at 12 Hawthorn Terrace, Blackhill, Benfieldside, Co Durham & working as a mason.

Margaret died on June 27th, 1893, aged 68, at Low Thornley Farm, Winlaton, Co Durham.  Probate was granted on October 21st, 1893 to William Maughan, builder and her effects were £25.

There is a death for John Pallister, aged 39, registered in April-June 1893 in Lanchester.
