Mary Ann Pallister [p.1.6.5.3.5]

Mary Ann Pallister was the fifth child of John Pallister & Sarah Thompson christened July 2nd, 1824 at Lanchester.

In 1841 Mary Ann was living at Hornsby Hill, Lanchester with her parents & 8 brothers & sisters. Mary Ann had given birth to an illegitimate son, Robert George, 3 months prior to the census, who was also living at Hornsby Hill.

The child of Mary Ann Pallister was:

p.1.6.5.3.5.1 Robert George Pallister christened March 12th, 1841 at All Saints, Lanchester.

Mary Ann married William Proud in Oct-December 1847, the marriage being registered at Weardale, Co Durham. William was christened June 10th, 1821 at Lanchester, the son of Mary & William Proud.

In 1851 Mary Ann was living with her mother-in-law, Mary Proud, a 73 year old widow at Lanchester. She had 2 children listed with her – John W (2) & Mary J (under 1 month). Mary’s husband William was a journeyman blacksmith & at the time of the census he was living at Holmside Lane, Holmside, Nr Lanchester.

In 1861 William & Mary Ann were living at Brunswick St, Stockton where William was now a labourer at the foundry. There were 3 children with them – John William, Sarah J (10) & Moorhouse (6). They had a visitor William Renwick, aged 1 year & a 73 year old boarder, Mary Walton, formerly a laundress.

Daughter Sarah Jane died in 1865 & was buried alongside her grandparents, Mary & William Proud, at All Saints, Lanchester.

By 1871 William had returned to live at Holmside & his occupation was now given as a blacksmith. Although still described as married on the census, wife Mary Ann could not be found in the census. With William was their son, Moorhouse James. Son John William, a miner, had married Esther Fairs & he & Esther were living with her parents Jane & Christoper Fairs in Holmside in 1871. 

In April-June 1875 son Moorhouse, a coal miner, married Elizabeth Ann Wilson at Chester-le-Street.

In 1881 William was living at 2 Brick Flats, Lanchester & was described as a general labourer. He had a 50 year old housekeeper, Margaret Johnson.

p.1.6.5.3.5.5 Thomas Pallister Proud born September 19th, 1856 at Norton, & christened November 30th, 1856 at Norton, Stockton; buried February 1st, 1858 at St Thomas, Stockton
