John McCree Pallister was the seventh child of Ralph Speed Pallister & Eleanor McCree born April 2nd 1851 at Castle Eden & christened October 19th, 1851 at Holy Trinity, Wingate Grange, Easington.
In 1861 John was still living at home at Cargills Court, Wingate Grange Colliery, Co Durham. His 3 older brothers Robert, Ralph & William, all coal miners, & sister Sarah were also at home.
By 1871 John, a labourer at the stone heap, was head of the household at 66 Burdon St, Ryhope. Also living there was John’s mother Ellen & brother Ralph S, a fireman & sister Sarah (21), a manglewoman. A nephew of John McCree’s was also listed on the census – John Pallister, only 3 months old. This was the son of his sister Sarah McCree Pallister. There was also a visitor – Charles Carney, a 25 year old screeman from Ireland.
John married Barbara Hall on September 6th, 1873 at St Paul’s church, Ryhope, Co. Durham. Barbara was born at Hetton-le-Hole & christened January 16th, 1854 at Easington, the daughter of Margaret Slack & John Hall, a miner. At the time of his marriage John was described as a brakesman. Witnesses at the wedding were George Thompson & Ann Hunter.
In 1881 John & Barbara were living at 14 Gibson Terrace, Ryhope & John was now an engineman. They had 4 children – John (6), William (4), Ralph (2) & Ellen (Helen in census) aged 5 months. Prior to their marriage Barbara had given birth to an illigitimate child Annie Hall in June 1871. At the time of the census Annie, now 9 years old, was visiting her aunt Annie Hall, who was now married to Winship Soppitt, a blacksmith, in Framwellgate, Durham. Annie was listed as Annie Pallister.
The family were still living at 14 Gibson Terr in 1891 & John was still working at the colliery as an engineman. Son John was also working as an engineman & William was a coal miner. Also at home were Ralph S & Ellen McC as well as new additions – Margaret (7), who was noted as blind on the census, Robert S (5) & Dorothy (11 months). Another son, George McCree, had been born in 1885 but sadly he died in infancy.
In 1896 John was a witness at the wedding of his 'step' daughter Annie to James Wright at St Paul's, Ryhope. He was also listed as Annie's father.
John & Barbara continued to live at Gibson Terr & in the 1901 census John was described as a stationary enginedriver. Son Ralph was still at home & working as a mason labourer. Also at home were Ellen, Margaret, Robert, a general labourer, & Dorothy. Also listed with them on the census was a ‘son’ Robert aged 10 who was born in Ryhope. However there is no record of another son Robert Pallister being born to John & Barbara c1891. This Robert was probably grandson Robert Harold Trusty, a son of Barbara’s daughter Annie [ha.8.1] & her husband Robert Trusty who was born Jan-March 1891 at Ryhope as Robert Harold was not with his parents at this time.
Barbara died on May 6th, 1901, aged 47, at 14 Gibson Terrace, Ryhope.
John died on July 14th 1902 aged 51, at 14 Gibson Terrace, Ryhope & was buried in Ryhope Cemetery.
