Peter Pallister [p.1.6.3.6]

We are grateful to Nick Reay, 3x great grandson of Peter Pallister for information on Peter & his children

Peter Pallister was the sixth child of William Pallister & Isabella Blackburn born at Iveston & christened January 10th, 1796 at All Saints, Lanchester, Co. Durham.

Peter's baptism record from Bishop's Transcripts (also showing the baptism of Peter's cousin John Pallister [p.1.6.5.3])

Peter married Catherine Gerry on October 6th, 1822 at St Paul’s, Jarrow, Co Durham. Witnesses at the wedding were Thomas Sheldon & Jane Dodds. Catherine was born c1798 at Boldon, Co Durham & there is a christening for Catherine Garrey on April 13th, 1800 at Boldon, the daughter of Ann & Francis Garrey.

It is recorded in a family bible that Peter & Catherine had 9 children from 1823 until 1841. Sadly their first daughter Anna Louisa, born in 1825 died, aged just 6, at Boundary House & was buried on April 3rd, 1831 at St John's, Gateshead Fell. It appears that the family lived at Boundary House, Wrekenton until at least 1871.

In 1841 Peter & Catherine were living at Gateshead & Peter was described as a husbandsman. They had 7 children at home at this time – William (17) a coal miner, Isabella (13), Hannah (11), Peter (8), Mary (6), Catherine (4) & Robert ( 1 month).

They were at Wrekenton, Gateshead by 1851 & Peter was now a horse keeper at the colliery. Living with them was daughter Isabella, now married to John Pattison (31), an agricultural labourer from Northumberland. Also at home were Hannah, Catherine & Robert.

Peter & Catherine were still living at Wrekenton in 1861 but Peter had left the colliery & was now an agricultural labourer. Children Catherine & Robert were still at home, Robert was a blacksmith’s apprentice.

In 1871 Peter, now 76, & Catherine, 70, were still at Wrekenton, Gateshead, now living at Boundary House. Son Robert & his family were also living at the same address. Living with Peter (a husbandman out of employment) & Catherine were daughter Catherine & a grandson Joseph, aged 9.

Peter, aged 82, died & was buried on July 18th, 1871 at St Thomas’, Eighton Banks, Gateshead.

Catherine died aged 76 & was buried on May 29th, 1874 at St Thomas’, Eighton Banks, Gateshead.

The children of Peter Pallister & Catherine Gerry were:
