John Stone [st.1.8]

John Stone was the ninth child of William Stone & Ann Simcox born September 19th, 1837 at Hall St, West Bromwich, & christened October 29th, at Christ Church, West Browmich, Staffs.

In 1851 John was still living at home at Guns Lane, West Bromwich with his parents & brother Charles. Both John & Charles were forge boys.

John married Mary Haywood in July-September 1857 at St James, West Bromwich. Mary was born Jan-March 1838 at West Bromwich, the daughter of Sarah Ann Watkins & Samuel Haywood, a nailer.

In 1861 John & Mary were living at Harwood St, West Bromwich & John was described as a labourer. They had a 2 year old son Charles.

By 1871 they had moved to Pendleton, Salford, Lancs where John was a puddler of iron. Their family had grown considerably. In addition to Charles they now had Mary A (9), William (6), Sarah (5), James (4), Selina (2) & Elizabeth (1). They had 2 visitors, nephew Benjamin Stone (20), the son of John’s brother Benjamin, & John Robinson (25), an iron puddler.

The family were still living in Pendleton in 1881 at 52 Borough St, & John was still an iron puddler. Children at home were Mary Ann, a cotton weaver, William, a drawer in cotton mill, Sarah, James, a hoist driver, Selina, a cotton weaver half time, John (9), Alice (5) & Ada (7 months). At the time of the census daughter Elizabeth was a scholar at the Manchester School for Deaf & Dumb at Stretford, Lancs. It was noted that she had been deaf from birth.

Daughter Mary Ann married in Oct-December 1881 at Salford, her husband being Peter Cauldwell, a calenderer at the bleach works (a calenderer pressed cloth between rollers to make it smooth). By 1911 they were to have 7 children, only 4 daughters & 1 son being still alive.

Son James married Mary Burke in Oct-December 1888 at Salford.  James changed his occupation a number of times becoming a labourer in the print works in 1891, & then became a fried fish shop keeper in Liverpool St, Salford by 1901 like his father.  He & Mary were still both working in the business in 1911 by which time they had had 10 children, 7 of whom were still living.

In 1891 John & Mary were living at 29 Alderson St, Pendleton & John had become a fried fish dealer (coffee). At home were Sarah, a domestic servant, Selina, a colour weaver, John, a labourer in the spinning mill, Alice, a colour weaver & Elizabeth, a pin winder. Daughter Ada was still at home as was their youngest child Clara (8). Living next door at 27 Alderson St was son William & his wife Mary Jane (nee Hamilton) & their 2 young daughters.  William was a cotton drawer & his wife was a cotton winder.

Daughter Selina married Robert James Littler on June 6th, 1892 at St Thomas’, Pendleton.  In 1901 Selina had also joined the fried fish shop trade & was working from home at Scales St, Pendleton while husband Robert worked as a railway clerk.  By 1911 they were living at Worsley, Lancs with their 3 daughters.

Son John also married in 1892, his wife being Winifred Riley.  The 1901 census shows them living at 56 Church St, Pendleton with their 2 sons Ernest & John.  John was a tramcar driver.

Mary died in Jan-March 1893, aged 56, the death being registered at Salford.

Daughter Sarah married Albert Senior in Oct-December 1896 at Salford.  They were to have 5 sons & 1 daughter by 1911 when they were living in Newport, Monmouthshire, Wales.  They were still living in Newport in 1939. Albert was an engine fitter having worked in Gomersal, Yorkshire for a time where 3 of their children were born.

In 1901 widowed John was still a shopkeeper selling fried fish & living at the same address. Deaf & dumb daughter Elizabeth was also working in the shop which was also noted as a coffee shop.

By 1911 John had moved to 321 Broad St, Pendleton & was described as an old age pensioner, formerly an iron worker.  Living with him were daughters Elizabeth Hannah & Alice, a confectionery baker.  It was noted on the census that John was married & had been married for 11 years, however his second wife has not yet been identified.  It was also noted that he had had 17 children, only 10 of whom were still alive!

Daughters Elizabeth Hannah & Alice never married & were found living together at 321 Broad St, Salford at the time of the 1939 register.  Alice was working as a confectioner, cake maker & Elizabeth was doing domestic duties.

John died February 27th, 1919 at 40 Keswick Grove, Pendleton, aged 81.  Probate was granted on March 20th, 1919 to son-in-law Robert James Littler, a railway clerk (husband of John’s daughter Selina).   John’s effects were £170.4s.11d.
